In the early 1600’s, Yonkers was a small farming town located between the Hudson River and The Bronx River. With an active waterfront, Yonkers relied heavily on developing industry for much of its growth. Yonkers was originally part of Manhattan and the Bronx, but in 1645, Yonkers was purchased in a land grant from Manhattan by Adriaen van der Donck, the first lawyer in New York City.

Van der Donck was known locally as the Jonkheer (young gentleman in Dutch) or Jonker, the word from which the name Yonkers was derived from. At one time in the mid- 1600’s, the entire city of Yonkers, belonged to Frederick Phillipse, a wealthy Dutchman who amassed an enormous estate. His home, The Phillipse Manor Hall was built in 1682 and still stands today as a museum offering glimpses into life before the American Revolution.
